Brevity Codes

The following are the official Stray Dogs Brevity codes, level-1 (mandatory). Please print out this page or otherwise keep it handy during flights.

The codes, including level-2 and -3 (optional) are also available as an excel spreadsheet from our FTP server.  Feedback and comments to Webmaster@87th.org.

 

ABORT [event] Directive - cease action, e.g. abort mission. Opposite to CONTINUE.
[emitter] ACTIVE Directive / informative - emitter radiating, e.g. RADAR ACTIVE.
ALPHA CHECK Request / confirmation of - bearing and range to described point, e.g. "ALPHACHECK STEERPOINT two, twenty miles".
ALTITUDE Request / informative - height of enemy aircraft. Use with "full expression" - "sixteen thousand". Compare ANGELS.
ANGELS / SAY ANGELS Informative / request - height of friendly aircraft in thousands of feet - "ANGELS ten". Compare ALTITUDE.
MASTER ARM [on / off] Directive / informative - MASTER ARM on / off, select weapon.
[bombs] AWAY Informative - ordnance released.
BANDIT Informative - aircraft identified as enemy in accordance to ROE.
BARCAP Mission - Barrier Combat Air Patrol, denial of enemy aircrafts crossing a "barrier".
[left / right] BASE [leg] Informative - aircraft in overhead pattern on right or left base leg.
BDA Mission - Battle Damage Assessment, post strike reconnaissance to assess target damage.
BEAM [cardinal / heading] Maneuver to aspect between 070 and 110.
BINGO FUEL Informative - reached fuel state needed for recovery.
BLIND Informative - no VISUAL contact with friendly aircraft. Opposite to VISUAL.
BLOWTHROUGH Directive / informative - aircraft / element will continue straight ahead at MERGE and not turn with target / targets.
BOGEY Informative - radar or tally on air contact whose identity is unknown.
BOGEY DOPE Request - bearing and range to bogey, and if available, heading, speed, and altitude.
BOX Informative - group / contacts / formation in square or offset square.
BRACKET / BRACKETING [left / right / hi / low] Directive / informative - maneuver aircraft to opposing sides laterally or vertically regarding to target.
BREAK / BREAKING [left / right / hi / low] Directive / informative - perform immediate maximum performance turn in indicated direction. Assumes a defensive situation.
BROADCAST Directive - switch to BROADCAST channel.
BROKE LOCK Informative - loss of radarlock on BANDIT. Like FADED.
BUDDY SPIKE Informative - friendly aircraft A/A indication on RWR (followed by position / heading / altitude).
BULLS / BULLSEYE [bearing and range] Predetermined point from which the position of an object can be referenced.
GO / GOING BURNER Directive / informative - go to maximum speed, i.e. afterburner. Similar to BUSTER.
CAP Mission - Combat Area Patrol
ESTABLISH CAP [location] Directive - establish CAP at specified location.
CAS Mission -  Close Air Support, destroy enemy ground units.
CBU Designation - Cluster Bomb Unit - "CBU AWAY"
CHAFF Informative - dumping chaff.
CHAINSAW Directive / informative - attack by several aircraft launching AIM120:s and then slicing away from threat.
CHECK [left / right / bearing / clockface / cardinal] Directive / informative - alter course for radarscan and return to original heading.
CLEAN Informative - no enemy or unknown radar contacts within range. If applicable used in conjunction with CLEAR and NAKED. Opposite to CONTACT.
CLEAR Informative - no bandit within visual range. If applicable used in conjunction with CLEAN and NAKED.
CLEARED HOT Informative - requested action and weapon release is authorizied.
CLOSE / CLOSING Directive / informative - close distance within formation.
COLD / SITUATION COLD Informative - rear hemisphere of enemy aircraft towards pilot.
COMBATJET Dierctive / informative - jettison external fuel and all A/G-stores.
GO / GOING COMBAT SPREAD Directive / informative - go combat spread formation.
CONTACT Informative - sensor contact at stated point. I.e. "contact 12 o´clock for twenty, sixteenthousand, print unclear". Opposite to CLEAN.
CONTINUE Directive / informative - continue action / mission AS FRAGGED. Opposite to ABORT and KNOCK IT OFF.
COVER / COVERING Directive / informative - assume supporting role. Like SUPPORT, opposite to ENGAGING.
CROSSWIND Informative - aircraft in overhead pattern on crosswind leg.
DAKOTA Informative - out of A/G ordnance.
DCA Mission - Defensive Counter Air, protecting friendly assets in patrol area.
DEFENSIVE Informative - taking defensive (evasive) action.
DEPLOY / DEPLOYING TO [steerpoint / position] Directive / informative - proceed to indicated steerpoint / position. Similr to PUSH / PUSHING.
DISENGAGE / DISENGAGING Directive / informative - disengage current attack/engagement. Similar to KNOCK IT OFF / ABORT.
DIVERT / DIVERTING TO [target/base] Directive / informative - proceed to alternate mission/base.
DOWNWIND Informative - aircraft in overhead pattern on downwind leg. Between CROSSWIND and BASELEG, 180 degrees opposite intended landing direction.
DRAG / DRAGGING Directive / informative - maneuvering to less than 60 degrees aspect angle.
ENGAGE / ENGAGING Directive / informative - attack target, assume engaging role. Opposite to SUPPORT / COVER.
ESCORT Mission - Protect strike package from enemy aircrafts.
EVASIVE Informative - taking defensive action.
EXTEND / EXTENDING [direction] Directive / informative - head out from fight to gain distance and altitude with objective to reentering at better position.
FAC Mission - Forward Air Controller, provide target information for CAS-aircrafts and artillery.
FEET WET/DRY Informative - passing coastline in/out over water/land.
FENCE CHECK Directive - check systems and weapons appropriate with situation.
FENCE IN Informative - entering enemy airspace, i.e. FENCE CHECK.
FINALS Informative - aircraft on finals.
FLARE Informative - dumping flares.
FLOT Forward Line Of Troops
FOX ONE Informative - lanching semi active missile (e.g. Sparrow)
FOX TWO Informative - launching rear aspect IR guided missile (e.g. Sidewinder)
FOX TWO MIKE Informative - launching all aspect IR guided missile (e.g. Sidewinder)
FOX THREE Informative - launching medium to longrange autonomous missile (e.g. AMRAAM / PHOENIX)
[continue] AS FRAGGED Directive - continue as / return to planned mission route / action.
FUELCHECK Request - for current fuel state.
GREEN [heading] Informative - direction to get clear of enemy air-to-air activity.
GUNS GUNS GUNS Informative - firing guns.
GUNS BREAK Directive - break turn out of plane.
GUNS JINK Directive - perform immediate guns defensive maneuver.
HARD TURN [direction] Directive - high-G sustaining turn.
HAUND DOG Informative -by supporting fighter or wingman indicating he is visual, tally, and has a clear path to bandit. I.e. in advantageous position to engage.
HAVCAP Mission - High Value Asset Combat Air Patrol, e.g. protecting AWACCS during patrol.
HIGH Informative - target between 20000 and 30000 ft MSL (Note: above 30000 ft in real life).
HOMEPLATE Glossary - home airfield.
HOOK / HOOKING (in conjunction w. point) Directive / informative - turn into target after bracket. In coop with POINTER
HOOK [left/right] Directive / informative - perform / follow in position for a one-eighty degree turn.
HOSTILE Informative - bandit is taking hostile actions, e.g. launching missile.
HOT / SITUATION HOT Informative - front hemisphere of enemy aircraft is towards pilot.
ID Directive - intercept and identify target.
INTERCEPT Mission - starting outside 15 NM to get within fire parameters, preferebly preventing targets detecting own flight.
INTERDICTION Mission - Attack on logistics or reenforcing / supplying units.
INVERSE-T Directive / informative - go inverted VIC.
JINK Directive -perform immediate guns defensive maneuver.
JOKER Informative - fuel state level (above BINGO) at which separation / bugout should begin.
JUDY Informative - aircrew has radar / visual contact to correct target and will silence.
KICK / KICKING OUT Directive / informative - increase distance within formation. Opposite to CLOSE IN.
GO / GOING LADDER Directive / informative - go ladder formation.
LEVEL Informative - same level as caller / formation. E.g. single target two o´clock level, twelve miles
LEVEL / LEVELLING OFF Directive / informative - level off at altitude from dive / climb.
LOW Informative - target below 10000 ft MSL.
MAGNUM Informative - launch of friendly antiradiation missile (AGM-88)
MEDIUM Informative - target between 10000 and 20000 ft MSL. (Note: 10000 to 20000 ft in real life!)
MERGED [PLOT] Informative - closing aircrafts / groups have merged and can not be separated by GCI / AWACS, also merged as in fight.
GO / GOING MIL [military] Directive / informative - go to military power (100% "dry" thrust).
MISSILE INBOUND Informative - launch of enemy missile.
MUD SPIKE [clockwise / position / type] Informative - RWR ground threat displayed, followed by clockwise direction or position, and if known - type.
MUSIC [on / off] Directive / informative - ECM (Electronic Counter Measures) on / off.
NAILS [cardinal / clockwise] Informative - RWR indication of enemy air intercept radars. Opposite to NAKED. Including clockwise or position and if known threat type
NAILS [clockwise / position / type] Informative - RWR indication of AI radar in search, followed by clockwise direction or position, and if known - type.
NAKED Informative - no RWR indications. If applicable used in conjunction with CLEAN and CLEAR. Opposite to NAILS.
NEGATIVE Informative - can not / will not comply. Compare UNABLE.
NO FACTOR Informative - not a threat, e.g. continue as FRAGGED.
NO JOY Informative - no visual on bandit. Opposite of TALLY.
OCA Mission - Offensive Counter Air, destruction of enemy air capabilities, e.g. striking airbases.
OFF [direction] Informative - attack is terminated and extending indicated direction.
OUTLAW Aircraft originating from position indicating it as likely enemy.
PACKAGE Collection of aircrafts or groups of aircrafts.
PAVEWAY Informative - release of Paveway series laser guided bomb.
PICTURE Request / informative - tactical situation status pertinent to mission.
PITBULL Informative - Reaching launchdistance for a FOX3-shot, target locked and ready to fire.
SAY POSITION [bulls / relative stpt x] Request - current position. Could be specified as bulls, relative stpt or geographical point like city or airbase etc.
PRECONTACT Informative - at precontact position ready to close in for A/A refueling.
PRESS / PRESSING Directive / informative - continue attack.
PRINT [type] Informative - quality of NCTR response, e.g. PRINT UNCLEAR.
PUSH [channel] Directive - go to indicated channel, i.e. PUSH BROADCAST.
PUSH / PUSHING STEERPOINT Directive / informative - "PUSH STEERPOINT THREE". Like DEPLOY.
PUSHING Informative - calling is behind bandit.
RADIOCHECK Request - radiocheck.
RAYGUN [position] Informative - radar lock to unknown aircraft. I.e. request for “BUDDY SPIKE" from friendly aircraft meeting parameters, purpose to prevent fratricide.
RIFLE Informative - release of AGM-65 Maverick.
ROGER Informative - transmission received, should be followed by reply indicating action. Does not mean action necessary will be taken.
RTB Directive / informative - Return To Base.
RTO Directive / informative - Ready to Take-Off.
RUNN 'EM UP Directive - Increase RPM to 80% and stand by for brakes.
SAMLAUNCH [cardinal / clockwise] Informative - visual acquisition of SAM launch.
SAME Informative - SAME radarcontact as called out by other flightmember is detected on own scope.
SCAN / SCANNING [left / right / hi / low] Directive / informative - perform radarsearch as indicated.
SEAD Mission - Surpression of Enemy Air Defense
SEAD-ESCORT Mission - Protect strike package from enemy air defenses.
SEAD STRIKE Mission - Strike aiming at destruction of enemy air defense assets.
SHOOTER / COVER Directive - flight lead attack / wingman cover.
SHOOTER / SHOOTER Directive - flight lead and wingman both attack targets.
SMOKE ON / OFF Directive / informative - turn smoke on / off for visual aquisition.
SNAP [bearing and range] Informative - direct vector to indicated target.
SNIPER [clockwise / distance / type] Directive  - employ HARM against specified target.
SNOOZE / SNOOZING RADAR Directive / informative - prevent radar from emitting.
SORT / SORTING [directive] Directive / informative - aquire and lock on target, purpose to verify bandits and engage / launch at separate targets.
SORTED Informative - separate targets has been aquired and locked on. Ready to engage.
SPIKE [clockwise / position / type] Informative - RWR indication of enemy radar in track, launch, or unknown mode. Including clockwise or position and if known threat type.
SPLASH [numbers] Informative - bandit shot down. "FALCON-ONE-ONE SPLASH ONE BANDIT"
STAND / STANDING BY Directive / informative - stand by for more information on this channel.
WHAT STATE Request - for (AA) ordnance and fuelstate.
STATUS Request - tactical situation.
STEERPOINT [number] Preplanned steeringpoint.
SUNDOWN Informative -AWACS is no longerproviding controlfunction / assistance. Same as MIDNIGHT.
SUNRISE Informative -AWACS is beginning to provide controlfunction / assistance.
SWEEP Mission - Clearing the area of enemy air threats
TALLY (-HO) Informative - visual on BANDIT. Opposite to NO JOY.
TARCAP Mission - Target Area Combat Air Patrol, protecting friendly attack aircraft over a target area.
TRACKING Informative - stabilizied weapon solution. Continous illumination of target.
GO / GOING TRAIL Directive / informative - go trail formation.
GO / GOING TRAIN Directive / informative - go train formation.
TUMBLEWEED Informative - loss of situational awareness.
UNABLE Informative - can not comply. Compare NEGATIVE.
UPWIND Informative - aircraft in overhead pattern on upwind leg.
GO / GOING WEDGE Directive / informative - go to WEDGE formation.
VERY HIGH Informative - target between above 30000 ft MSL. (Note: not used in  real life?!)
VIC Informative - three contacts/groups with single closest and element in trail.
WILCO Informative - WILL COmply as directed. Opposite of UNABLE / NEGATIVE.
WINCHESTER Informative - no ordnance remaining (not accounting guns).
VISUAL Informative - sighting of a friendly aircraft / ground position. Opposite to BLIND.
ZIPPER Informative - acknowledge of radio message with two clicks on mike button.
